The legend of Wayambey, a young aboriginal warrior who was surrounded by tribal enemies and retreated into the river holding his shield up to avoid being speared to death.

His enemies continued to throw spears into the river but he never resurfaced. All they saw was the shell of the river turtle that could not be penetrated by the spears. The spirit of Wayambey thus became the river turtle.
